NEWPORT

Adam Schneider, one of the old citizens of Newport, died yesterday, at his residence on Monmouth street, from a combination of the diseases of asthma and dropsy. He was born in Germany, October 16, 1815, and immigrated to this country in 1845, making his temporary home in Philadelphia, Penn. During the same year, he went to Pittsburg, where he remained for two years and in 1847 came to Newport, where he has resided ever since.

Soon after reaching Newport, his wife died from an attack of cholera. In 1849 he made a matrimonial alliance with Miss Catherine Goeller, who had recently arrived from Germany. The deceased was a stone mason by trade and built the Finchtown distillery which he operated for a number of years. In connection with the same he constructed a grist mill, which the Government forbade him to run. He disposed of the property, which was subsequently destroyed by fire and was rebuilt by Robson & Co.

He afterwards engaged in the wholesale liquor business in Newport, which proved profitable and lucrative, but unfortunately for himself, he became security for others who failing in their ventures left him in the lurch and deprived him of his hard made earnings. He was a person of prominence among his fellows having been elected Councilman from the Fifth Ward, which position he filled with commendable ability.

He was a prominent member of the APA, the IOOF, and the German Pioneers, all of which will attend his funeral in a body. For many years he was the treasurer of the German Benevolent Society, the duties of which were most faithfully performed. His ill health caused him to resign about a year ago, his position being filled by the election of Henry Ebert, Esquire.

The deceased leaves four children, all of whom reside in this city. His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the family residence.
