Abel A Davis, 60, residing at 536 Central Avenue, died Sunday at his home, after a lingering illness. Asthma was the immediate cause of his death. The deceased was one of Newport's best known citizens. He was a Deputy Sheriff and had served in that capacity at the Queen City race track for a number of years. He was a member of William Nelson Post, GAR and leaves a widow and grown daughter.
The funeral arrangements are not yet completed but the GAR posts will have charge of the obsequies.

The members of William Nelson Post No 1, GAR will meet at their hall Wednesday at 1 pm in uniform to attend the funeral of Abel Davis, who was a member of the post. Services will be held at the Baptist Church. Rev Thompson will officiate.
The funeral of Deputy Sheriff Abel Davis took place Wednesday afternoon with services at the First Baptist Church, Newport, Rev Dr. Thompson officiating. The members of William Nelson Post attended and six veterans acted as pallbearers. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
