Sgt. William McGowan, Negro, of 412 Brighton street, Newport, attached with the Infantry in the 24th Division, was killed in action on Aug 31 in Korea, his grandmother, Mrs. Polly Mason, 412 Brighton street, was advised Tuesday by the War Department.

Sgt. McGowan had been previously cited during the Korean war for leading a troop of US soldiers back to safety. Sgt. McGowan entered the service in 1947. Besides his grandmother, Sgt. McGowan leaves an uncle, Joseph Petty and a sister, Cynthia McGowan, both of Newport.
