Death of Veteran Colonel Nathaniel C Macrae

But the chief mourner at the death bed was old Thomas Dixon, a colored man of Newport. Thomas was born in the service of the Colonel's father, (John Macrae) "down in ole Varginny" five weeks after Nathaniel was born 18 November 1805, in Dumfries, William County, Virginia.

The two, slave and master, grew up children together and became much attached to each other. The Major brought Tomas with him to the West, and the faithful servant followed and watched over him to the end. It ws pitiful to hear the old colored man tell yesterday now he had been with his "Marser" to the last and seen him off for the everlasting land beyond the river.
