Kentucky Post, Tuesday, 5 April 1921, page 1

Edward Hamilton, Campbell co detective, Tuesday was investigating the death of Arthur Butts, 34, negro, who operates a boarding house near the Andrews steel plant, Newport, who was found unconscious in a culvert beneath a trestle of the L&N RR Monday afternoon. The negro died without regaining consciousness. Various theories as to the cause of the injuries of the negro were advanced Tuesday.

Dr. Walter Hughes, Campbell co coroner, said he believed the negro was struck by a train. Police he was either beaten or fell from the trestle. The negro was found by Joseph Sherman, mill hand of 515 W Seventh st. Newport. Sherman was walking along the railroad track when he heard groans from the culvert. Police believe the man was in the culvert for several hours before he was found.

He was rushed to Speers Hospital, Dayton, in the Newport emergency patrol. His skull was fractured. Coroner Hughes said Tuesday he would hold an inquest if he could find witnesses.
