        1.  Aaron Spalding  (Moses Clarke4, Thomas3, Peter2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1780 in St. Mary's Co, Maryland, and died July 2, 1859 in Twelve Mile, Campbell Co, KY.  He married Hannah A Herbert January 4, 1805 in Four Mile, Campbell Co, KY, daughter of Josiah Herbert and Sarah.  She was born Abt. 1775 in VA.

Notes for Aaron Spalding: The History of the Spalding Family of Great Britain

The Spalding family originated in Flanders, the old home of many East Anglians of Britain. The surname Spalding appeared quite early in English history; unquestionably derived from the town of Spalding, Lincolnshire. The first written record about Spalding was a charter issued in 716 A.D. by King Ethelbald to the monks of Crowland Abbey.  Another charter in 868 A.D. referred to the town as "Spaldelying."

Spalding began as a division town of the fens & marshes; the only point where a road ran over the low country. "Yng" is the Celtic word for "fen or low meadow land," & today the locals still call fens - "ungs." Spalding was one of the Saxon divisions of the county known as "Spalda." The Saxon suffix "ing" from the Teutonic, "ingoz," denotes son or a family or tribe; thus, the people who lived in Spalding were known as the "Spaldingas" or the Spalding tribe.

In the "Doomsday Book," the town is spelled Spallinge. "Spall" or "Spald" means in Latin, "the shoulder," and the town of Spalding, of Saxon derivation, literally means "the tribe who lives at the shoulder."

The Spaldas were known to have held land in South Holland in the 7th Century, part of a Saxon kingdom. The "Doomsday Survey," showed s. Holland to be an area of large villages concentrated on islands in the fens. The town early became a market center with two important industries" salt-making & fisheries. The manor of Spalding, before the Norman Conquest, belonged to the King's Geld. William the Conqueror, although he confiscated some land belonging to Anglo Saxon nobles, didn't touch lands belonging to any of his feudal tennants in Spalding. The manor of Spalding belonged to Algar, Earl of Mercia. William conferred it upon his nephew Ivo Talbois. It became the Duchy of Lancaster.

The first recorded Spalding is Ralph de Spalding, 1273. Judge Chas. Warren Spalding, author of "The Spalding Memorial," obtained an ancient English deed naming him. When Edward III in 1327 ordered a wool merchant to be elected to Parliament for York, William de Spalding, son of Richard de Spalding, was elected for the Borough. The Parliament of 1337 held at Westminster had both a William & a John de Spalding.

The Spaldings went north into Scotland and west into central England, moving into Suffolk & Norfolk. They settled around Bury St. Edmunds, Framlingham, and the valley of the Waveney River. Thomas Spalding was named in the will of John Spalding of Wisser, yeoman, proved Dec 10, 1659, naming his sons - Thomas, Richard, & John, ancestors of Thomas Spalding, progenitor of the Maryland Spaldings.

The first Spalding to come to the American colonies, of whom there is an early record, was Edward Spalding, his wife, son & daughter. They were living at Elizabeth City, VA, 16 Feb 1623. Edward & his family left Jamestown & sailed to New England and became the progenitors of the Massachusetts Spaldings.

Religious reasons motivated Marylanders to move into the trans-Allegheny region after the Revolution. From the Protestant Revolution during the last decade of the 17th century to the American Revolution, Catholics in MD had been denied the right to hold political office. In 1785, a group of southern MD families formed a Catholic League & removed to Kentucky. Other reasons were the depredations suffered by MD citizens at the hands of the British during both the Revolutionary War & the War of 1812. The British fleet, constantly present in waters surrounding the colony, confiscated slaves & stock, sacked homes, lived off supplies plundered from the plantations in s. Md.

Economic reason also exerted a strong influence. The Tobacco Coast suffered soil depletion due to heavy agricultural use of the tobacco crops. The six proprietary manors in s. MD, which included the farms of the Spaldings, were to be confiscated by the government & sold. The manors had been occupied & farmed by Spaldings who leased them from the Proprietor, paying a small annual rent. The manors' purchase price after the war was too high for many renters. Taxes were raised according to the worth of the land; purchasers went into debt by giving bond to the state as the purchase price. Many could not complete the required payments; the new landowners saw migration to Ky. as a way out of their dilemma.

The usual route to Kentucky from MD was overland to Pittsburgh. There families boarded flatboats & traveled down the Ohio River to Limestone. They disembarked to avoid the area above the falls of the Ohio, known to be the home of the fierce Shawnee. From Maysville, they traveled overland to one of the many "family stations" located near settlements. These stations played a vital role in settling the Kentucky frontier. The danger of Indian attack made isolated homesteads impractical. Between 1774 & 1790, every neighborhood boasted a blockhouse station which provided safety until farms could be established. It is likely that many men left their wives & children at a station while they traveled to their "claim." In order to be given a deed to the claim, land had to be worked & a small shelter built.

Read the story of Aaron & Hannah Herbert Spalding to find out when they came into Kentucky. Were there settlements in Campbell Co at this time? What was there? What did they have to do to start a family? Imagine you are entering the wilderness along the Ohio River, what dangers would you face ?
