Newport's first murder of the new year was recorded Tuesday with the fatal shooting of Patterson Presley, 52, Negro, 120 W Second street, Newport, during an argument over a five cent card game.
Joseph Brannen, 64, Negro, 120 W Southgate street, charged with the fatal shooting, surrendered to police. He said he fired in self-defense after the victim had threatened his life with a knife. Arraigned today before Police Judge Alfred G Maybury, the accused Negro was referred to County Court.
