COLORED CHURCH CONSECRATION

The members of the congregation of the M E Church (Colored) of Newport, who for some months past have, through the kindness and courtesy of the city officials; been worshipping every Sunday at the Court house, have secured as their future place of worship, the frame building, known as the "Jeffries Church" on the corner of Mayo street and Central avenue.

On tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock this edifice will be dedicated with appropriate ceremonies. The choir from the church of the latter, assisted by the Misses Bell of Newport, will conduct the singing.

The Rev Henry Harris, who has filled the pastorship for the last two and a half months will continue as pastor of the new church until the next annual conference which will assemble March 25th. The colored M E congregations of Cincinnati and Covington will unite with their brethren of Newport in the ceremonies of dedication; and a cordial invitation to participate therein is extended to their white brethren of the three sister cities of Cincinnati, Covington and Newport.

A collection will be taken up on the occasion to aid in defraying the church debt.

There is trouble in the Colored Methodist Church on Southgate street in Newport. The members are dissatisfied with Brother Nelson and in their efforts to rid of him an arrest was the result.

The trouble seems to be that the objectors to Brother Nelson claim that he is domineering and that he is arbitrary in his rulings, and they are determined to get rid of him. In order to do this they engaged Rev Reilly of Walnut Hills, to preach to them but Brother Nelson could not see it in that light, and when Rev Reilly called at the church last Friday night, Nelson had locked the doors and refused to give up the keys. Rev Reilly came to the conclusion that Brother Nelson had no right to lock up so he kicked in the doors and held services.

Yesterday Brother Nelson appeared before Mayor Ahlering and caused Rev Reilly's arrest for malicious destruction of property. Brother Nelson says that no other preacher shall hold services in the church as he claims he owns the property and to sustain his claim, he shows a deed for the property, which had been transferred to him by James Wallace. There will fun at the hearing before the Mayor Monday.
