A murder charge was returned against Melvin Stewart, 17 year old Newport Negro, for the baseball bat slaying of Jerry Gloeckner, 22, of 1015 Saratoga street, Newport. Police said the youth had been admonished by Mr. Gloechner after his bike struck him. The accused youth returned 15 minutes later and struck the victim over the head with his newly purchased baseball bat.

The trial of Melvin Stewart, 17, of W Sixth street, Newport, indicted for murder in the baseball bat slaying of Jerry Gloeckner, 22, of 1013 Saratoga street, Newport, was set for Nov 10. The fatal blow followed an altercation June 3 after Gloeckner admonished the Stewart youth for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk.
