NEARLY LOST LIFE IN BELLEVUE

A gas main on Foote-av about Center st. Bellevue, began to leak at 10:30 this morning, and James White, 36, colored, of Newport, nearly lost his life. White has been in the employ of Contractor McLane, who has the $62,000 contract for the new Bellevue sewer system.

White was in a ditch digging at a depth of 26 feet, when pipes belonging to the Union Light, Heat and Power co. filled the ditch with gas, overcoming him. He was found unconscious. Inspector Geo Kuhlenberg and a number of men went to the rescue and White was drawn to the surface. A rope had to be put around him and he was hauled up. It was thought life was extinct for some time, but with vigorous treatment he was revived and will recover.

Kuhlenberg at once notified the gas company and the work of flushing the manholes has been stopped. White was assisted to his home.
