James Newman, recently sentence to one year in the penitentiary for obtaining goods by false pretenses, was yesterday claimed as a slave by Col. Taylor of Newport. Should his claim be established the negro will be tried again and if found guilty, will be whipped.

James Newman, 62, colored, formerly of Newport Ky. was sent to City Infirmary Saturday. He has been a familiar figure, begging on Fourth and Fifth sts. For 20 years Newman traveled with the John Robinson Circus as a general utility man and was a favorite of the original John Robinson, Robert Stickney, the famous bareback rider; John Lowlow, the clown and other circus celebrities. Some years ago Newman lost his left foot in a railroad accident.
