A Colored Physician Horsewhipped
Colored circles in the neighborhood of Columbia and Southgate
streets are in a feverish state of excitement over an occurrence which happened
yesterday morning, and it was the all absorbing topic of the day among the
colored brethren and sisters.
Dr. W H Guinn is a colored physician with an office on Columbia street, between Fourth and Southgate streets, and guarantees to cure all chronic complaints that mankind is heir to. Two colored ladies, named Carrie Harvey and Mary Tracey, from Southgate street, called on the doctor for treatment for a certain ailment. The doctor prescribed for the patients and when they returned home and the medicine began to work on them, which they described as being most peculiar, they at once sensed the doctor of having given them some love potion.
Their belief in this was strengthened by the fact that some of their friends agreed with them and one of them, more learned that the rest said that cantharides had been one of the ingredients. They at once resolved upon revenge and one of them arming herself with a blacksnake whip, they repaired to the office of the doctor.
When the doctor answered the call at the door, they pounced upon him and while one held him the other piled the whip around the neck and shoulders of the designing doctor. The arrival of the police, attracted by his lusty cries, caused the infuriated amazons to quit. They were all arrested and will have a hearing before the Mayor this morning. Dr. Guinn stands away up in the colored society and the result as to his guilt or innocence of this grave charge will be watched with interest.
