NEWPORT
Edward Alexander, colored, and an employee of John McArthur, who
owns several horses at the Newport Race track, got into an altercation with his
employer yesterday morning over the question of wages.
Alexander claiming that he had not been paid. A fight was started and McArthur received a severe beating. He swore out a warrant in County Judge Bennett's Court in Newport and Deputy Sheriff Follette brought Alexander to the Newport Jail, where he was locked up on a charge of assault and battery.
Judge Bennett will hear his case this morning.
