Deputy Sheriffs Charles Davis and Harry Egbert of Sheriff Nagel's force, had a desperate encounter with a negro named Ben Stone on a shanty boat moored in the Licking River near Finchtown at noon today. John Dyson, who resides on the Licking pike south of Newport, had a warrant issued in the Newport Police Court this morning on an affidavit alleging that Stone had stolen a dressed hog from his place last night.

The warrant was placed in the Deputies hands to serve and they located him on the shanty boat. Davis, as they reached the boat, called out to Stone to take him across the river. A second later, Stone appeared at the door with a double barreled shotgun in his hands. He remarked, "What do you want?" Davis replied, "I want you" at the same time grabbing the Negro by the arm and drawing his weapon.

Egbert and Davis overpowered him and disarmed him. They also arrested a young Negro named Craig and a young colored woman who was on the boat. A search of the boat revealed the missing hog. Stone having cut it up for future use. The Negroes were taken to the Newport Jail and locked up.
