Louis F. Tracy, One of County’s
Oldest Citizens, Dies at Age of 95
WHITELAND, Nov. 23—Johnson County lost one of its oldest citizens in the passing of Louis F. Tracy, Monday night. Mr. Tracy died at the age of 95 at 11:30 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mr. Dault Whitaker, one mile east of here. Funeral services are to be held at the Burkhart funeral home in Greenwood Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment will take place in the Greenwood cemetery.
Friends may
call at the mortuary after 6 p.m. Wednesday and are invited to attend the rites.
He was born, Nov. 9, 1853 at Whiteland, the son of Mathew and Margaret Smith Tracy.
His entire life was spent in Pleasant township where he was a farmer and breeder of
Jersey cattle.
In 1882 at Whiteland he was married to Margaret Brewer and eight children were born
to this union. Mrs. Tracy died in 1937 and two children preceded the parents in death.
Mr. Tracy was well versed in the knowledge of many of the county families which had found
his memory of great value in compiling genealogies. His father was a soldier in the Civil
War; James Tracy, his grandfather, served in the War of 1812, and his great-grandfather
participated in the Revolutionary War.
For many years Mr. Tracy had been a member of the Whiteland Methodist church and the
Franklin Masonic lodge.
Mr. Tracy celebrated his 95th birthday Nov. 9. He was a good father and neighbor, and a highly respected citizen.
Surviving are the five daughters, Mrs. Ethelyn Bardsley, of Paola, Kas., Mrs. Vivian Wheatcraft of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Isabel Reichart, and Miss Eleanor Tracy, both of Frankfort, and Mrs. Whitaker; and one son, Francis Tracy, of Lawrence. Also remaining are ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
