Gertrude Juanita Thornton

Gertrude Juanita (Bennett) Thornton, 79, died Saturday, 
Feb. 8, 2003, at Plainfield Health Center. She was a resi-
dent of Plainfield and a former resident of Smith Valley 
and Kennedy Living Center in Martinsville.

She was born March 6, 1923, in Smith Valley. Her parents 
were Worth and Sally (Thompson) Bennett. She married 
Sam Thornton on Dec. 30, 1968. He preceded her in death 
Sept. 2, 1984. Survivors include a stepson, Raymond Thorn-
ton of Spencer; a brother, Worth Bennett Jr. of Whiteland; 
two sisters, Mary Day of Greenwood and Helen Thomann 
of Rockville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
 two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and 
nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, George 
Bennett; and a sister, Marjorie Birtchman.

She was a 1941 graduate of Center Grove High School.

She was employed by Lane Bryant as a clerk and was 
an Avon representative.

She was a member of Smith Valley United Methodist 
Church.

Everett Van Winkel will conduct a service at 1 p.m. Tues-
day at Vandivier-Tudor Bargersville Chapel. Friends may call 
from 11 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. 
Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in White River 
Township.
