OBITUARY.

––––––––

Mr. Morgan Roop, for many years a prominent citizen of Franklin County was run over and killed by a locomotive on the 3rd inst., about half a mile south of Greenwood, Johnson Co., Ind.

Mr. Roop was born in Huntington Co., Pennsylvania, April 10, 1797, and when 27 years of age came to Franklin Co., Ind., where he resided until the year 1862. In that year he moved to Greenwood, where he resided until his death. The writer of this notice was well acquainted with Mr. Roop for many years, and always found him a true and faithful friend—never varying in his friendships when he was treated justly. He was a man of decided opinions, and had the courage at all times to express them. He served many years as constable of Brookville township, and as deputy sheriff of Franklin Co. At the time of his death he was acting as deputy to the Sheriff of Johnson Co.

Some years before he removed to Greenwood he bought a farm near Palestine upon which he resided until his removal to Johnson County. At the time of his death, though 77 years old, he had the activity and vigor of a man of fifty and bore but few marks of age, and but for his violent death bid fair to live many years. Mr. Roop raised a large and respectable family many of whom survived him, and his worth as a citizen is only known to our oldest inhabitants—and the writer takes pleasure in acknowledging his worth and remembering him as one of his oldest and best friends. But no praise of mine can now reach him and I must be satisfied to speak of him as I remember him, and to hope that this last great change has found him prepared to expect the Christian’s reward. He left a widow, but no small and dependent children to mourn his loss.      H.
