Funeral Wednesday


The death of William A. Mit­chell, age 87, occurred at his home on South Hougham street this mor­ning at 10 o’clock, following an illness of four weeks from heart disease.

Mr. Mitchell was well known in this community where he spent his entire life. Since his retirement from active farm work ten years ago he had made his home in Franklin.

He was born October 18, 1837, and spent his young manhood on a farm south of this city. He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Laurinda Nay. Two daughters by this marriage survive and are Mrs. Joseph H. Mellendore of Frank­lin and Mrs. Nancy Hill of Kansas City.

Following the death of Mrs. Mitchell, he was married the second time to Miss Susan Grattner, who survives. Nine children were born to them as follows:

James, John and Charles Mitchell of Franklin, Mrs. Della Batton, Indi­anapolis, Mrs. Hattie Nash, Fran­klin and Mrs. Dollie McKinney, Amity. Three sons, George, Leslie and Wes­ley are deceased.

Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Young’s creek Christian church and the funeral services will be held at the church Wednesday after­noon at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Coy will be in charge of the services. The body was removed to the Van­divier undertaking parlors where fri­ends may call before the funeral.

Mitchell died at 10 a. m. on 26 Aug 1924 at his residence, 410 Hougham in Franklin from chronic interstitial nephritis of several years’ duration, contributory cause myocarditis, aged eighty-six years, ten months and seven days. He was male, white, married to Sedocia [sic] Mitchell, and a retired farmer, born on 18 Oct 1837 in Johnson County. His father's name was James Mitchell, birthplace unknown and his mother’s maiden name Elizabeth Ashley, born in North Carolina. The informant was John Mitchell. He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery on 27 Aug 1924, A. Vandivier & Sons, undertaker.
