Death of Rachel Mathes.

Mrs. Rachel Mathes died Sunday evening at 6:40 o’clock at her home on East Jefferson St, in this city.

About a year ago she suffered from a stroke of paralysis from which, at the time, it was thought she could not recover. Since that date she has been in poor health although able to be up most of the time and occasionally ride out on pleasant days. Last Saturday morning she fell and broke her hip. The shock, combined with enfeebled condition caused death on the following day.

Deceased was the widow of Wm. J. Mathes, who died Oct. 9, 1886, and had been a resident of Franklin for thirty-three years. She was the daughter of James Mullikin and was born in Henry county, Ky., Feb. 13, 1823. At the age of eighteen months her mother died. Her father again married and in 1829 came to Johnson county, settling near Williamsburg.

March 22, 1845, she was married to Wm. J. Mathes, who for many years conducted a general merchandise store at Williamsburg. To this union three children were born, Aquila Mathes, Mrs. Clara Fesler and Miss Ellen Mathes, all of whom survive. Deceased leaves four half-brothers, viz: James and George Mullikin, of Illinois; Wm. V. and H. P. Mullikin, of this county, and four half-sisters: Mrs. Frank Featherngill and Mrs. Robert Hunt, of this county, Mrs. Sarah Kirby, of Illinois, and Mrs. Wm. Kerr of Monroe county.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the family residence, conducted by Rev. T. M. Wiles, assisted by Elder J. C. Ashley. Burial at Greenlawn.
