Miss Leonie Markey, of this place, died on Saturday last, Aug. 30th of typhoid fever aged 17 years 3 months 9 days. The deceased had been ill for about four weeks and was thought to be getting better and just a week before her death sat up a short time, but was taken with a chill shortly afterward and rapidly grew worse, notwithstanding, all that loving hands could do for her till death claimed her for its own. Leonie was buried on Sunday from the residence of her step-father, Mr. H. A. Treeler, and Salem M. E. Sunday school of which she was a member, marched in procession from the residence to the church a half mile distant, where the funeral was preached by her pastor, Rev. J. D. Hartsock, and when the young lady pall bearers had lowered the mortal remains of their friend and school mate to its last resting place, the entire school marched past the grave in procession and each deposited a spray of cedar in the open grave and the last sad scene was over and while the mortal rests in the embrace of mother earth, the spirit has returned to the God who gave it.
