Terrible and Probably Fatal Accident.

An accident occurred in Union township on Monday afternoon last, that may result in the death of a young lady. Miss Lu Brown, aged sixteen, daughter of Mr. John J. Brown, was engaged in doing the family washing, a fire for the purpose of boiling the clothes having been built close to where the young lady was working. From this fire her clothing caught and flamed up around her. Her cries brought her mother and a gentleman who was doing some painting on the house, to her assistance, both of whom were severely burned in relieving her. After the flames were extinguished, an examination showed her to be badly burned from the knees to the waist. Medical assistance was summoned as soon as possible. Her sufferings were most excruciating; and it was reported that the injuries would most probably prove fatal.

As coincidences of this affair it may be stated that about three years ago a child of a brother of Mr. Brown, cousin to this young lady, was burned to death, and a child of a cousin of Mr. Brown, a few years since, met a like fate. Mr. Brown is also a brother of the old gentleman who, last winter, was murdered in Morgan County, with which crime Mrs. Parrott and “Buck” Brown, daughter and son of the murdered man, and Joe Greer, a son-in-law, were charged—the first and last having been tried, however, and acquitted.

Note: Miss Brown did NOT die as a result of this accident. She lived until 1900.
