Chelice [sic], the little nine year old son of Smiley W. Hicks and wife, died Thursday evening of last week at his home in west Franklin, after a week’s illness from appendicitis. The funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at the First Mt. Pleasant Church.

Notes: The Johnson County Indiana WPA Birth Index, 1882–1920, referencing Book H-2 page 233, records that a white male child was born to Smyley [sic] Hicks and Ellen McQuinn on 2 Jul 1891.

Note:  Indiana, Death Certificates, 1899–2011, Franklin, Franklin Township, Johnson County, Certificate and Record of Death, Health Officer’s Record Number 28, page 117 records that Chelcie Hicks died at about 4 o’clock p. m. on 26 Jul 1900 in Franklin, Indiana from peritonitis of four days’ duration, caused by appendicitis of six days’ duration, aged nine years, no months and twenty-four days, born in Johnson County, Indiana. He was male, white, and single, no occupation recorded. His father’s name was Smiley Walt Hicks and his mother’s maiden name Ella McQuinn, both born in Johnson County, Indiana. The informant was Harry Hicks. Chelcie was buried on 28 Jul 1900 in 2nd Mt. Pleasant, E. G. Barnhizer, undertaker.
