OBITUARY.

James L. Henderson was born December 3, 1828 and died January 19, 1897. His parents were among the first settlers of this county and his father entered the land from the government on which Hopewell church and Hopewell academy now stand. Mr. Henderson’s father donated the land and also helped very liberaly [sic] to build the Hopewell church. Mr. Henderson was born near Hopewell and has resided in this county all his life. In 1855 he was married to Mary A. Lagrange and to this union was born four children, Robert C. now in Colorado, Martha E. deceased, Mrs. Anna Tracy and Mrs. Winchester. On March 9, 1869, the wife and mother was called to rest. In January 24, 1871, Mr. Henderson was married to Miss Margaret J. Vanarsdall, daughter of Cornelius and Jane Vanarsdall, of Whiteland. To this union were born three children, Gilbert N., Elmer T., and Stella J., all of whom are living. Mr. Henderson has been a member of the Hopewell Presbyterian church for forty-seven years. He has always been a faith attendant and a cheerful and liberal supporter of his church. Mr. Hendrson [sic] owned two good farms, the one where he lived and another farther south. He was faithful and loving husband and a kind and indulgent father. He had the highest respect of all who knew him for his honest business integrity and his willingness to help his friends. He leaves three sons, three daughters and a host of friends and relatives to mourn his departure. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved widow and fatherless sons and daughters. The funeral was held in Hopewell church, of which he was so long a member, and the devices were conducted by Rev. Bright, the pastor. The burial was in Hopewell Cemetery.
