Widely Known Farmer and Summer
Camp Owner Victim of Infection
William H. Heflen [sic], age 81, widely known farmer and owner and operator of the popular Heflen Camp summer resort near here for many years, died at his residence on South Walnut Street at 4:45 p.m. Sunday.
Mr. Heflen had been ill for several weeks from a throat infection, his condition gradually becoming worse.
Friends may call at the Mutz Funeral Chapel until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral rites will be held from the Old Union Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday and burial will be made in Rest Haven Cemetery here. Rev. C. C. Bonnell of Hope assisted by Rev. Ray Bozell will conduct the funeral rites.
Surviving are the wife Lillian Quinby Heflen of Edinburg; four sons, Roscoe, Carl and Ralph Heflen of Edinburg rural route and Fred of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother, George Heflen of Columbus rural route; one sister, Mrs. Mary Henderson of Galesburg, Illinois; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The deceased was born in Indiana Oct. 26, 1858 the son of Frederick and Catherine Steinbarger Heflen. He was married to Ida Clark, November 28, 1888, who preceded him in death in 1931. In 1937 he was married to Lillian Quinby of New York. Since that time he had made his home in Edinburg.
He was a member of the Edinburg Masonic Lodge and the local Chapter Eastern Star and was a lifelong member of the Old Union Church southwest of here, having been born in that community.
Mr. Heflen built the Heflen Camp, which has become a widely known and popular summer resort, on the banks of Driftwood River in 1908. He, with the help of his sons, operated both the farm and the camp for many years, Carl Heflen later taking over the entire management of the camp. He was widely known throughout this section of the state and in many other states. For the past number of years he had spent the winters in Florida and a number of years ago he was made a Kentucky Colonel. He leaves hundreds of friends.
