J. HARRY GHARST
      J. Harry Gharst, 87, 302 S. Walnut St., Edinburgh, died Friday night at
Bartholomew County Hospital.  He was the father of Edinburgh Town Manager
Betty Essex.
      Services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home with
the Revs. Ray Chapman and George Eagler officiating.  Burial was at Rest
Haven Cemetery. 
      Born November 28, 1897 in Douglas County, Ill., he was the son of Eli and
Ella Mae (Jones) Gharst.  He married Gladys Cobb on February 3, 1921.  She
died this past May.
      Mr. Gharst moved to Johnson County in the early 1900’s and farmed what is
now Camp Atterbury.  He lived in Edinburgh since 1941.
      He formerly served as president of the Nineveh Township Farm Bureau in
Bartholomew County.  He also served as former secretary of the Rest Haven
Cemetery and was a member and former secretary of Edinburgh Masonic Lodge
#100.
      Mr. Gharst was a member of the Edinburgh United Methodist Church. 
      In addition to Mrs. Essex other survivors include one daughter, Ann
Hathaway of Englewood, Fla.; two sons, John D. Gharst, Cincinnati, and
Cleon E. Gharst, Edinburgh; seven grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
