Our Smith’s Valley correspondent mentions the sudden death of Wm. Doty, age 67 years, an old and respected citizen of White River township. His grandson, Alva Surface, nine years old, was with his grandfather. Friday morning he arose to build the fire, supposing his grandfather to be asleep. About seven o’clock the boy’s father came to see how Mr. Doty was, and going to the bed, discovered that instead of sleeping, he was dead.

A friend that’s dearer than father,
With his children ever near;
He can smile away their sorrows,
He can banish every fear,
Yes the blessed Lord was with him,
As he still grew weak and faint,
And a bright halo of glory
Spread around the dying saint.
