Death of Mrs. Gertrude Demaree.

Mrs. Gertrude Fisher Demaree, wife of Victor B. Demaree, died, Friday Feb. 14, at her home in Vinton, Iowa of lung trouble. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Fisher, old residents of Vinton, and was married to Victor Demaree, March 28, 1894 at that place. She was a graduate of the Vinton high school, a member of the Presbyterian church and a lady of much refinement and literary tastes. Her mother’s name was Amanda Banta. She at one time resided in Johnson county where she is well remembered by many relatives and friends.

The funeral services took place in the Presbyterian church at Vinton, Saturday, Feb. 15, conducted by Rev. R. H. Hartley assisted by Rev. W. H. Jordon.

The regular pastor of the church to which Mrs. Demaree belonged was absent in California at the time of her death and could not be present. He has since sent the following:

TRIBUTE OF RESPECT.

In the death of Mrs. Gertrude Fisher Demaree I have a peculiar sense of bereavement. It has been my privilege to watch her growth and development from girlhood to womanhood, to receive her into the church on her profession of faith, to give her in marriage to the worthy and estimable man of her choice. In every relation and circumstance of life her character has won my admiration. She possessed mental powers of more than ordinary brilliancy and promise. She was an intelligent and a devoted Christian. As a Sunday school teacher and an active worker in the Young People’s Society of the church she exerted a marked influence for good.

Free from undue personal ambition, a stranger to petty jealousies, interested in the best things, faithful toward God and true to her friends, her brief life has been a noble one. She has not lived in vain. As her pastor for fourteen years I have found the life of the true-hearted girl a pleasure and positive help to me.

With profound sympathy for those who are most deeply touched and strickened by her removal, I pay this affectionate tribute to her memory.
