Death of O. H. Curry

Orville H. Curry, an old and highly esteemed citizen of this county, died of heart trouble and other complications at his home north of Arbela January 17, 1906, after a long illness, aged 72 years, 4 months and 22 days.
Deceased was of stalwart frame, prepossessing in appearance, fine sensibility, pleasing address and was always most courteous and cordial to greeting his fellow man. Better still, he was as kind and tender hearted as he was big. The writer knew him intimately from the day he settled in that part of the county down the day of his death. When we were a lad in Johnson Township he was our ideal of a perfect type of manhood. Honest, generous, hospitable, sympathetic and courtly in all the walks of life he made friends wherever he was known. Possessing the strength and stature of a giant in those days he was as gentle and sweet spirited as a woman. He had a sunny disposition. Never allowed himself to live on the darkside or dwell among the shadows. He preferred to scatter sunshine wherever he went. Such a life is worth something as an example and is a blessed heritage to the children who now mourn his death. The removal of such a man is a positive loss to the county and state.
Deceased was born in Johnson County, Indiana, August 26, 1833. He was united in marriage with Rachel C. Harris, of Johnson County, Indiana, September 2, 1854. They moved from there to Lucas County, Iowa in 1856, and from there to Scotland County, Missouri in 1859, where his wife passed away August 6, 1885. Eleven children were born of this union, viz: James H., Martha J., Mary E., John W., Margaret E., Chas. A., Lewis H., Dillard T., Tisdale E., and Wm. T. All are living except an infant son and Dillard T., who preceded him to the spirit land. Of the surviving children James H., John W., Wm. T., Mrs. Mary Adams and Mrs. Margaret McClellan live in this county near Abela [sic] and Granger, Mrs. Martha Hohstadt and Charles A. live at Ayon [sic], Colorado, Lewis H. at Ft. Madison and Tisdale E. at Ottumwa, Iowa.
The funeral services were held at Black Oak Baptist church, January 19, Rev. W. H. F. Jones, pastor of the Baptist church of this city, officiating, after which all that was mortal of our old friend was tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery. Peace to his ashes and condolences to those who mourn the loss of a good father.
