Thomas Canter
Former Brown County resident Thomas Truman Canter died Monday, July 19, 1999. at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. A resident of that city, he was 83.
Mr. Canter was born June 26, 1916, in Lee County, Kentucky to Benjamin Franklin and Hallie Tate Thomas Kanter. He and Irene Keaton were married February 16, 1941, in Franklin. She survives.
Mr. Canter was graduated from Helmsburg High School in 1936. He attended Indiana Bible Institute and Basic Engineering School in Great Lakes, Illinois.
He had worked in the die shop at General Motors’ Chevrolet Truck and Bus Division in Indianapolis for 42 years, retiring in 1979.
Active in evangelistic work, Mr. Canter had preached at the Lighthouse Mission for 25 years.
He had been a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Mr. Canter was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He had received two medals for service at Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
Other survivors include a son, Thomas Charles Canter of Littleton, Colorado; two daughters, Theresa June Canter of New York City and Maria Lena Smith of Franklin; a brother. Robert Bruce Kanter of Greenwood; two sisters, Helen Privara of Chicago and Peggy Moore of Bean Blossom; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James Erwin Kanter, Victor Franklin Kanter, Joy Paul Kanter and William Carlyle Kanter; and a sister, Mary Frances Davis.
A service was conducted Friday morning, July 23, at G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home’s Greenwood Chapel.
Burial was in Johnson County’s Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
