Mrs. Elizabeth E. Berryman, matron of the orphan’s home died at her home last Saturday evening, after an illness of about four weeks. She contracted a heavy cold and this settled on her lungs and caused pneumonia which resulted in her death. Rev. E. I. Davis, of the Hopewell Presbyterian church preached the funeral sermon Monday morning and Rev. VanCleve took charge of the services at the Salem M. E. church, where the burial occurred.

Mrs. Berryman was born in Cass county, near Logansport, April 11, 1837, and came to Johnson county about ten years ago. On the 10th of March, 1891, she was appointed matron at the Orphan’s Home and always manifested a kind disposition in the treatment of the children. She was a good woman.

The remains of Mrs. Berryman, the matron of the Orphans Home at Hopewell who died Saturday, the 23[rd], was brought to Salem cemetery and interred Christmas Day. Rev. VanCleve conducted the funeral service.

Notes: The 1850 US Federal Census for Harrison, Cass County, Indiana records fifty-four-year-old, Ohio-born Nathaniel Bell, his fifty-four-year-old, Ohio-born wife Mary Bell and their Indiana-born children, twenty-one-year-old William Bell, eighteen-year-old Mary J. Bell, seventeen-year-old Nathaniel Bell and thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Bell.
The Cass County Indiana WPA Marriage Index, 1850–1920, referencing Book 3 page 342, records that Jeal [sic] M Berryman married Elizabeth E. Bell on 3 Jan 1861.
The 1870 US Federal Census for Harrison, Cass County, Indiana records seventy-three-year-old, Ohio-born Nathaniel Bell, his seventy-one-year-old, Ohio-born wife Mary Bell and their Indiana-born children, thirty-seven-year-old Nathaniel and thirty-four-year-old Elizabeth Berryman. Also recorded are Elizabeth’s two children, eight-year-old, Indiana-born Nathaniel Berryman and six-year-old, Indiana-born Mary Berryman.
The 1880 US Federal Census for Harrison, Cass County, Indiana records forty-five-year-old Nathaniel Bell, his thirty-two-year-old wife Addie Bell, their seven-month-old son Harry Bell, his forty-two-year-old widowed sister Elizabeth Berryman, and her children, eighteen-year-old Nathaniel and sixteen-year-old Molly Berryman.
