John T. Ditmars, farmer and stock-raiser, was born in New Jersey, January 7, 1830, and is the ninth in a family of thirteen children born to Garrett and Sarah (Verbryke) Ditmars. When our subject was four months old his parents removed to Warren County, Ohio, and in 1836, came to Johnson County, Ind. He was reared on a farm and attended the country school during the winter. At the age of twenty-one years he began working for himself, and for eight years worked by the month on the farm. In the spring of 1866, Mr. Ditmars settled on his present farm, which contains 304 acres of valuable land. Politically, he is an ardent republican, and cast his first presidential vote for Winfield Scott. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, a successful farmer, and one of the few remaining old pioneers of the county.
