Yuma County. A post, express and telegraph office, situated on teh COlorado River, where the Southern Pacific R R bridge is located, 247 miles west of Tucson, 250 miles west of Prescott, and 731 miles southeast of San Francisco. Population 1,500.
It is an important river trading point and transfer depot and is the county seat. Opposite the town, on the California side of the river, is Fort Yuma, garrisoned by several companies of troops. The place, including across the river, was first called Colorado City, then Arizona City, and afterwards by its present name. It is nicely located, and is surrounded by a fertile grazing and agricultural district. As a home for consumptives, persons troubled with lung and other complaints, Yuma is destined to become the resort par excellence of the Pacific Coast. In 1870 the county seat was removed to this place from La Paz. The Territorial Prison, located at this place, was begun in 1877. In May of the same yar, the Southern Pacific R. R. reached the California bank of the Colorado, and late in teh fall the bridge was completed across the river. THe draw, a Howe Truss, is provided with impored machinery, by which it can be opened and closed in three minutes by one man. Yuma is 126 feet above the sea-level, and 178 miles from the mouth of the Colorado. The river is about 500 feet wide at this place. Yuma as a sanitarium attracts some attention. For bronchial, lung and kidney diseases the climate is unsurpassed. Sun-bats can be obtained with ease. The nights are delicious, and the steady unbroken therometrical range of fall and winter make it almost unapproachable. The Southern Pacific Hotel, kept by Henry Weaver, is a fine commodious building containing accomodation enough for the traveling public. It is first-class in every respect; large, airy rooms, furnished throughout in a style superior to any other house in this Territory, and fitted up with all modern conveniences. Travelers who have crossed the hot, scorching desert of the Colorado are agreeably surprised to find an oasis like this - a place too remote as it may seem, to be containing all the luxuries as well as the necessaries of life.
