NOTES for P.B.S. PINCHBACK:
Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback (1837-1921) — also known as P. B. S. Pinchback — of Louisiana. Born in Macon County, Ga., May 10, 1837. Republican. Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; delegate to Louisiana state constitutional convention, 1868, 1879; delegate to Republican National Convention from Louisiana, 1868, 1884, 1888; member of Louisiana state senate, 1868-71; Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, 1871-72; Governor of Louisiana, 1872-73. Black. Methodist. Died in Washington, D.C., December 21, 1921. Interment at Metairie Cemetery.
P.B.S. Pinchbak was in Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana during the 1850's as a teen. He worked as a hotel porter, deck hand and a waiter on the Wabash & Erie Canal boats while there. He went by the name of Pickney Benton Stewart at the time. He also was a waiter at the Stewart House that was built by Mathew Stewart in 1833. The hotel was rebuilt after a fire in 1842 and renamed the St. Clair house in 1876. It was razed in 1969.

Pickney Benton Stewart PINCHBACK's daughter, Nina Eliza, married Nathan TOOMER. Their son, Nathan Eugene "Jean" TOOMER, born December 26, 1894 in Washington, D.C., published his novel 'Cane' "in 1923 while living at 1341 U Street with his grandfather, P.B.S. Pinchback. He was a major figure during the "Harlem Renaissance"
